Pretty much I attended a Walleye game this past weekend, tickets courtesy of @Simpsonati, and it was the most depressing thing I've ever seen. The game was tied going into the third and half way through the third, the wheels came off. The Walleye let up three goals in 2 minutes and that's when everything hit the fan. The crowd turned against the Walleye, booing and calling them pansies. At one point, a defenseman who is 6'4" decided to not drop his gloves in a fight which light the Toledo crowd on FIRE. Do the Walleye not remember the past two Toledo hockey teams? Natural born fighters. If someone challenges you, you better respond or this crowd will never accept you.
The first problem I saw was the leadership. The captain right now is Ryan Rogers and lead the Walleye to the playoffs last year. OK, I get that but this is a different season and its going downhill fast. You need a leader who has been in a leadership position and succeeded multiple times. If I had to choose a Walleye captain today, I would 100% pick Alden Hirschfield. Sure I might be a little bit of a homer but he has the resume to back it up. Let's see, Hirschfield was captain of the Northview Wildcats who went to the state finals. Hirschfield was the captain of the University of Miami(Ohio) after they went to the CCHA finals. And now he has ended up in his hometown of Toledo and is one of the leading scorers. Another attribute that Hirschfield brings is his tenacity and heart. One of the hardest workers to ever come from the city of Sylvania and will continue to succeed at whatever he does. That is who the ideal captain is.
Word around town is that the Toledo Walleye want to disaffiliate from the Chicago Blackhawks because they only want one affiliated team. I don't know much about this now but I'll definitely find out more.
