The Red Wings got off to a start even more than I said they would. We wanted 3 points from these two games in Montreal and Ottawa and we came out with 4. Absolutely huge because those are two teams that the Red Wings are competing with for the 4-8 playoff spot. Let’s take a look at the updated standings:
This how the standings look as of 2/24/2014: This is of 2/28/2014:
1. Pittsburgh 83 points 1. Pittsburgh 84 points
2. Boston 78 points 2. Boston 79 points
3. Tampa Bay 71 points 3. Montreal 73 points
4. Montreal 70 points 4. Tampa Bay 61 points
5. Toronto 70 points 5. Toronto 71 points
6. New York (Rangers) 67 points 6. New York (Rangers) 69 points
7. Philadelphia 66 points 7. Detroit 68 points
8. Detroit 64 points 8. Philadelphia 66 points
9. Columbus 63 points 9. Washington 65 points
10. Ottawa 63 points 10. Columbus 63 points
11. Washington 63 points 11. New Jersey 63 points
12. Carolina 61 points 12. Ottawa 63 points
13. New Jersey 61 points 13. Carolina 61 points
I know it has only been 2 games since the Olympics but this just illustrates how much every point matters. If the Red Wings were able to hold off the Canadians to just 1 point, then they would only be 4 points back of first place. But this is a great start for the Wings after this break. If Franzen can build on his hat trick from last night, then that would mean the Red Wings finally have some scoring. Next two games are at the Devils and home for Nick Lidstrom’s jersey retirement against the Avs. Hoping that the Red Wings are able to get 4 points out of this. Gain more separation against the Devils and then play hard for Nick.
